An Exploration of Connectionist and Symbolic Language Acquisition Techniques

چکیده

The problem of language acquistion was originally studied by psychologists, but now it is an important problem in Artificial Intelligence as well. Rumelhart and McClelland (from now on referred to as R&M) have claimed that simulating the internal workings of the brain (i.e. using a connectionist method) best models language acquistion. This problem is important for several reasons. It has many practical applications. For example, one could imagine an advanced grammar check program for a word processor that would not need to have been programmed to handle a certain word in order to detect if its past tense was handled properly. In fact, such a program could theoretically deal with words that did not exist when it was programmed with relative ease, a feature that is becoming more important as new technologies and therefore verbs are being invented all the time. It is also possible that solving this problem would shed light on other fields, including Psychology and Linguistics. In this paper we present the history of the debate between Symbolic and Connectionist methods for language acquisition. In section 2, we describe R&M’s early work. In section 3 we examine objections to R&M by the proponents of Symbolic methods, as well as a response to these objections from Connectionists. In section 4, we present the first symbolic method for learning the past tense. In section 5 we give examples of more recent work in the field of language acquistion. In section 6, we look to possible future work.

Language development and acquisition in children

Language acquisition is a natural developmental process and is unique to Homo sapiens in which a child acquiring his or her mother tongue as a first language.  The simplest theory of language development is that children learn language by imitating adult language. A second possibility is that children acquire language through conditioning. Noam Chomsky put forward innateness hypothesis. Piaget ...

Spoken Language Processing in the Hybrid Connectionist Architecture SCREEN

In this paper1 we describe a robust, learning approach to spoken language understanding. Since interactively spoken and computationally analyzed language often contains many errors, robust connectionist networks are used for providing a at screening analysis. A screening analysis is a shallow at analysis based on category sequences at various syntactic, semantic and dialog levels. Rather than u...

Dynamical Insight into Structure 1 Running head: DYNAMICAL INSIGHT INTO STRUCTURE IN CONNECTIONIST MODELS Dynamical Insight into Structure in Connectionist Models

I discuss a connectionist model, based on Elman’s (1990, 1991) Simple Recurrent Network, of the acquisition of complex syntactic structure. While not intended as a detailed model of the process children go through in acquiring natural languages, the model helps clarify concepts that may be useful for understanding the development of complex abilities. It provides evidence that connectionist lea...

Connectionism and Universals of Second Language Acquisition

This paper examines the implications of connectionist models of cognition for second language theory. Connectionism offers a challenge to the symbolic models which dominate cognitive science. In connectionist models all knowledge is embodied in a network of simple processing units joined by connections which are strengthened or weakened in response to regularities in input patterns. These model...

Symbolic Module Connectionist Module

This paper describes the system SYNHESYS, which is a shell for developing expert systems composed of both a connectionist module and a symbolic module. The shell allows for several types of interactions between the two modules, and for several degrees of coupling. SYNHESYS aims at facilitating the process of knowledge acquisition and at improving the performance of the symbolic module. We prese...
